Cholesterol-lowering medicine is continuing to rise throughout America. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults 40 years and older taking medicine to lower cholesterol increased from 20 to 28 percent throughout 2003 and 2012. The report also shows that age was a major factor, increasing with age. The population of 75 and older is at 48 percent while persons age ranging from 40 to 59 are at 17 percent.

high cholesterol statins

One of the big jumps in medicine during this time was the use of statins. Statins increased from 18 to 26 percent. Statins are a cholesterol lowering drug that blocks the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme. This enzyme produces cholesterol in the liver.

High cholesterol can develop for many different reasons. Diet is one of the major causes. Reducing the amount of saturated and trans fat in your diet may help to lower cholesterol. Being overweight and lack of activity can reduce the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) in the body. Other factors includes, disease, family history, age, gender, smoking, and medicines. If you find one of these is the reason for the spike in cholesterol, you may want to consult with your medical professional to develop a treatment plan that works for you.

There are many different brands of statins on the market today, including Lipitor, Lescol, Crestor, Zocor, and more. Statins help to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and heart disease. These medical conditions are the top leading causes of death in America. It is said in 2012, 93 percent of adults have used a statin.
